January 29, 2009 - lots of people say new york has some of the best food in the world but is it really, i heard a world class chef say that new york does have some really good restaurants but are totally out numbered by bad ones and that in new york it has become quantity over quality and that new york can no longer stand up againsts rome, london. what do you think?

I always eat well in New York. I'm a fussy Jewish vegan who obsesses about food, so I know what I'm talking about.
New York is like any other city. Is the food that good. OF course, if you want to eat in the restaurants in the Times Warner Building, or the Trump Tower you have restaurants that can hardly be beat, and prices that can hardly be beat. Most of us don't go to these restaurants as a regular diet and they do tend to be used a lot as business meeting restaurants. However on the next tier there are restaurants that leave you breathless and wanting more and wanting to come back again and again, and they are special. Are there restaurants in other cities that have great restaurants, of course. I'm not going to say we are the best, but excuse me have you been to London, they don't know how to cook, have you eveeer had a good meal there? Italy - yes, France --yes, other cities in the US like San Francisco, yes.
Yes, New York food is really that good, however, it is definitely not the best city for food in the world. Have you heard of the Michelin Guide? Anyway, it's the most respected judgement of food worldwide. So far they've only been to a handful of cities to rate the food. Tokyo has received the most amount of Michelin stars (3 is the best, although getting 1 star is still amazing), followed by Paris, London, then New York. Moreover, New York still has some of the best restaurants worldwide because some of the best chef's have opened restaurants there. If you want to try a Michelin rated restaurant in NYC that isn't expensive, go try and get a table at the Spotted Pig for lunch.
The remark about some really good ones being totally outnumbered by bad ones is dead wrong. The thing I love about NYC is that you can get all different kinds of meals that are great - cheap meals, expensive meals, fancy meals, homey meals - there are so many different kinds of terrific restaurants here, it's spoiled me for any place else!
It depends on you - your definition of good, I personally think that some of the food carts have the best sandwiches and dogs! Lombardis Pizza - BEST - Lunch at the Met - I had a GREAT egg salad sandwich. LaBorsa had the best lasagna I've ever eaten. You eat at some places and it's crap! It's personal preference but it's like any other city - there's just more to pick from.
best pizza in the world and most of the worlds most renowned chefs have restaurants in NYC. Sure there are a lot of dives too but thats to be expected with such a large, compressed population

No, I really did not like the food in New York. I think that the only people that think that live in New York and they have a big ego or don't know any better
It's true, NY has a lot of bad restaurants, but there are also some World-Class ones too! Get a Zagat Guide and check out the ones that are rated the highest. I guarantee you'll be a believer - just don't expect to skimp on the price! Great food doesn't come cheap!
I loved Katt's Deli they have the best pastrami sandwiches. Also the bagels out there are to die for, makes it hard to eat them out here in California anymore. I also ate at The Rainbow room which was at the top of the NBC studio building, but they were closing down the next week after 20 some years in business. Sardi's is awesome. I think New York has some good restaurant's but California has a lot too as well as other states. I don't think it's necessarily about New York having the best it's about the restaurant no matter where it's located.
Duh new York has the best food it is really good. THEY HAVE THE BEST PIZZA IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Some people don't like the food there because they go to the wrong places of course.

New York is like so many cities, there are many beyond just good restaurants and others that are just average. It is up to you as to which one you choose.
Good question, There are so many restaurants that specialize on different types of cuisines, I presume that if would like good Italian food or cuisine you woul visit an Italian restaurant. On the other hand, food and taste are define food as good or bad. I am sure that if you do abit of research you will find that most cities around the world do have their particular restaurant known for quality, and uniquenest.
the expensive restaurants always have great food because they have the best of the best when it comes to chefs
I lived there for about a year..came from Chicago. All places have crappy resturants...but some of the best places I ate in NY...magnificant!! Basso 56....great Italian food!
New York is pretty much the same as anywhere else. There are terrific restaurants and there are dives. We used to go to Mont Blanc on maybe 46th or 48th Street, between 8th and 9th, for wonderful food. It was very charming, in the lower level of a brownstone. Elegant, kind of expensive, wonderful service and the best steaks I've ever eaten. I'm out of NYC for about 18 years now, so I don't know if it's even there anymore. Chef Wong's in Bensonhurst Brooklyn had wonderful Chinese food, and a lot of it for not a lot of money. But Luchows which was supposed to be a world class restaurant gave us canned potatoes one year on Thanksgiving. No different than anywhere else...there's good, bad and indifferent.
